What’s an Aphrodisiac?

Aphrodisiacs are foods believed to increase libido and make people in the mood for sex. They are named after Aphrodite, ancient Greek goddess of love and sex. Spices, plants, different meats, and some synthetic substances are used as aphrodisiacs. Aphrodisiacs have been used since ancient times. Aristotle used saffron to enhance his sex life. He also warned Alexander about mint tea, telling him not to allow his warriors to drink it before battle lest it make them think of making love instead of war. The Greeks and Romans valued onions as a sexual stimulant, and they relied on mushrooms and truffles for this also.
One of the sexiest women of the ancient world was also one of the most powerful- Cleopatra, pharaoh of Egypt. She was said to spoil her lovers at lavish banquets that cost more than an entire estate, and drank pearls dissolved in wine to increase her own sex drive. She soaked herself in luxurious baths spiced with cardamom and cinnamon and mixed crushed almonds with honey, perfuming her feminine region with it to entice her lovers.
An ancient Chinese text from 2,600 BCE shares 22 ingredients the emperor mixed and downed before making love to over 1,000 women and this was said to have made him immortal. The ancient Chinese used the rhinoceros’ horn as an aphrodisiac and believed that eating the sexual organs of certain animals would improve male virility. The Emperor Shen-Nung of China reported that chewing ginseng improved his sex drive, and feudal Japanese sex workers used eels, lotus root, and charred newts as aphrodisiacs.
So, the use of aphrodisiacs is nothing new, but people don’t just rely on foods and spices for their aphrodisiac effects. Today, pharmaceuticals are used to increase sex drive, combat male erectile dysfunction, and relieve vaginal dryness so people can enjoy great sex. Some people say that proper hygiene is the best aphrodisiac, but other people believe that a little help from food or drugs never hurt anything. Other people believe that being a good person is the biggest turn-on there is. Read about being your best self here: How to Be Your Best Self
What Does Science Say?
Science says there are a lot of different reasons that substances help increase desire. First, if somebody takes the time out to treat you to a great meal, it will make you like them more. This will make you more likely to feel comfortable enough to be intimate with them, especially after many good meals. People feel closer to people who cook foods they love as well. It’s more than that, though. Some foods support hormone production, supporting the creation of testosterone, raising estrogen, and others increase blood flow. A healthy, balanced diet, however, is very important for your overall health. When you are at your healthiest, you have more energy for things like sex!
How Do Aphrodisiacs Work?
Aphrodisiacs don’t just stimulate the genitals, but they titillate the senses of taste, smell, and touch, and they create mood. Some lower blood pressure, making the blood flow properly. Others stimulate chemicals in the body that make people happier and more turned on. Things like alcohol can relax you, lowering inhibitions and make you more interested in sexual intimacy. Aphrodisiacs help enhance emotional connections for some people. If you cook something someone’s family always cooked for them, they feel emotionally supported and will feel closer to you.
What Foods Are Aphrodisiac?
There are countless foods and spices that you can use as aphrodisiacs- and you never have to see a doctor to get a prescription for them! Things like oysters, berries, chocolate, and red wine have been used for generations as aphrodisiacs. There are so many more things you might even have in your own kitchen like walnuts and fenugreek that are great aphrodisiacs.
Chocolate
Chocolate has two magical chemicals called serotonin and phenylethylamine. They boost good mood and create an orgasm in your mouth while they do it. They have been found to mildly increase sexual arousal. The Aztecs knew this and believed it was an aphrodisiac, and the Mayans associated it with a fertility god. Oysters

Zinc helps to aid in production of testosterone, something that elevates sex drive- and oysters are full of it! Sexy Italian adventurer and writer Casanova is said to have eaten 50 raw oysters a day for his sexual health. A study showed that he knew what he was doing, but it’s not just the zinc that helps. Raw oysters contain the amino acids D-aspartic acid and N-methyl-D aspartate. These are almost gone when the oysters are cooked, though, so eat them raw!
Apples
An apple a day is said to keep the doctor away, but it also aids in women’s libidos. Phloridzin, a substance found in apples, is said to be responsible for the boost. In a study, women who ate an apple a day saw cholesterol levels cut in half over six months and reported increased sexual satisfaction. So have an apple, ladies. Red Wine
The Greeks, Romans, and Cleopatra knew that red wine was an aphrodisiac. Not only does it relax you and take down inhibitions, but red wine decreases erectile dysfunction. It boosts testosterone, increases blood circulation, and increases sexual desire. So have a glass of red wine and toast your sexual health! Fenugreek
A little fenugreek in your food or taken as a supplement can enhance your sex drive. Both men and women reported enhanced sexual arousal after using fenugreek for two or three months. It is believed to increase both estrogen and testosterone, but that isn’t all it does. It lowers blood sugar and cholesterol and was used as an ancient folk remedy to increase milk production for nursing mothers.
Beef
Some people swear off beef and say it is a cardiovascular risk- but other people swear it is good for your body- and your libido. Animal-based protein can help build nutrition and strengthen your experience in the bedroom. Just be careful what cuts of beef you eat. Fatty meat can raise cholesterol and block your arteries, making blood flow to the genitals drop. Lean cuts of beef like sirloin will boost your protein and keep your system running strong! Berries
Strawberries are high in vitamin C and help reduce the risk of prostate cancer. Another high zinc food is blackberries, and they help with testosterone production, and therefore higher sex drive. Berries are also high in flavonoids, and this helps decrease the risk of erectile dysfunction. Blue, red, and purple fruits and vegetables contain anthocyanin, and it helps improve blood vessel health. So, eat lots of berries, and your sexual health will thank you.
Avocadoes
Another food high in zinc aiding testosterone, avocadoes are also high in vitamin E, which helps with sperm production. They are also high in polynutrients, which increase sexual satisfaction as well as desire. They are high in things like ascorbic acid and tocopherol, which reduces inflammation. Avocado can be eaten raw, or mixed with lemon, onion, spices, and garlic to create a lot of people’s favorite savory snack- guacamole! Eat away, your sexual health will thank you for it. Some flowers are edible, and you can read about their magic here; All About the Magic of Flowers
Walnuts
Called a superfood by some, walnuts are a super sexual supplement for men especially! They improve sperm motility, vitality, and morphology. They are packed with vitamins A, B1, B2, E, and F. These vitamins are what help the sperm, and benefit blood vessel lining, and help to keep a strong erection.
Bananas
Bananas are a power food that charge your energy batteries. Their potassium reduces the risk of muscle spasms in the bedroom, and increases your stamina, which gives you the strength to perform the act of making love. Bananas are also good at lowering blood sugar and lowers blood pressure and the risks of cardiovascular disease. A healthier body makes you have the energy for sex!
How To Use Aphrodisiacs

There are countless ways to use aphrodisiacs. The easiest ways are the best ways though. Cook with aphrodisiacs for your lover- and make sure your lover is near your kitchen with you while you do it! Consecrate your own body with aphrodisiacs so you will be irresistible, and make sure to use aphrodisiacs as incense so you can make the air sexy too!
Cooking
The smell of aphrodisiacs is enhanced by heat- in the kitchen! Cook for them, bake for them, and feed your lover aphrodisiacs. Even something simple like guacamole with fresh avocadoes will create a scent that will drive your lover wild and make them ravenous for your food- and you! Is there anything sexier than the smell of chocolate cake baking? Maybe chicken stuffed with smoked oyster dressing is. Bake and cook with aphrodisiacs for your lover while they are in your kitchen and then the smell and taste of the foods will make them wild for making love! Perfuming
Like Cleopatra perfumed herself with honey and other things, you can perfume yourself with aphrodisiacs. Every good cook knows the scent of a well-prepared meal will remain on their clothes after they have left the kitchen. So, don’t change your clothes after preparing your lover’s favorite foods. If you smell delicious, they will want to eat you up- in the bedroom! You can rub things like lavender and patchouli on your skin, both considered aphrodisiacs. Never underestimate the power of scenting your laundry with aphrodisiacs. It is safe to put a drop of lavender oil on a dryer sheet as you dry your clothes. Adding rosewater to regular water in a spray bottle creates an aphrodisiac mist you can spray your clean clothes with.
Incense
Things like fenugreek can be burned as incense to stimulate libido. Take a hint from the sexy Cleopatra and burn cardamon as an aphrodisiac incense. Cinnamon, black pepper, cloves, and ginger are all great aphrodisiacs. Make sure to use proper ventilation when burning anything. These can also be bought in oil form and used in oil diffusers as aphrodisiacs. Read about using spices and herbs magic here: Using Magical Spices and Herbs
Lady Saoirse’s Aphrodisiac Recipe
Any of the foods considered aphrodisiacs can act alone, but together, they are stronger. This recipe is an apple blackberry concoction that incorporates walnuts. Serve this with a side of green tea to maximize the aphrodisiac effect. * Note that the recipe calls for butter that is frozen- this is because frozen butter is the easiest to grate!
Apple Blackberry Crisp
Filling
2 ½ cups peeled, cored, and chopped apples
2 ½ cups fresh blackberries
¼ cup granulated sugar
½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
2 teaspoons fresh squeezed lemon juice
Topping
½ cup all-purpose flour
¼ cup quick cook oats
¾ cup packed dark brown sugar
½ cup chopped walnuts
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
½ teaspoon ground ginger
1/8 teaspoon salt
6 tablespoons frozen salted butter
-Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and grease a 9 by 13-inch glass baking dish.
-Filling
Prepare the filling first. Toss apples with lemon juice and add blackberries. Add sugar and cinnamon, tossing to coat well and place it all in the baking dish.
-Topping
In a separate bowl, prepare the topping. In a bowl, combine flour, oats, sugar, walnuts, cinnamon, ginger, and salt. Mix by hand until completely combined. Grate the frozen butter into this mixture. Toss the grated butter with this mixture until it is completely combined. Sprinkle the topping evenly over the filling.
-Bake for 40 to 45 minutes, or until the apples are soft. Serve hot or cold, and top with vanilla ice cream or freshly whipped cream. Share this with your lover to tantalize their tastebuds and put them in the mood for love making!
Aphrodisiacs support health and blood flow, improve relaxation, and some support hormones. When you are your healthiest, your body works best- all of it.
