What Are Limitations?
“ Know your limits, but never stop trying to break them.”- Kyle Maynard
Limitations are circumstances or conditions that restrict us. There may be a handicap or disability, or some kind of incapacity. They were also known as obstacles in our path. Visual impairment limits how much you can see. Hearing loss limits how much you can hear. An ability to walk will limit your mobility. Finances will limit how much you can do also. You can't spend $4000 if you only have $500.
Our opportunities can also be limited. Your work schedule might not allow you to take a series of seminars that you want. If you don't have a particular professional certification, that might hold you back from the promotion that you want. Our personal awareness can limit us also. Understanding other people's experiences is not possible for some people who haven't had those same experiences. We are limited by lack of knowledge that further limits us from knowing where to look to further our knowledge. Have there been changes and it is time for new beginnings? Are We Limited?
“ Everyone has limits. You just have to learn what your own limits are and deal with them accordingly.”- Nolan Ryan
Some people believe that limits only exist in the mind, but limits do exist. If you are legally blind, and no treatment exists to correct your vision, you can't be the pilot of an airplane. If you don't have a degree in medicine, you can't get a job at a hospital as a doctor. If you were unable to make a deadline, you can't be in a program that's been cut off for people that didn't make that deadline. If you can't secure transportation, you can't make a trip that you want to. Mindset won’t change some limitations.
Some people have never been hit with a limitation. They are lucky. The older you get, the greater the chance that you will deal with a limitation. If you were the captain of your football team in high school, and thirty years later are completely out of shape, you're not going to be able to score the way you did back then because your body is limited. Things like this happen to all of us, but some people who have not yet dealt with limitations don't want to admit that. Limitations can be disappointing. Learn how to deal with life’s letdowns here: Facing Disappointment-Coping with Life’s Letdowns
Some people believe that limitations are for the weak, and that those who succeed in certain areas will succeed everywhere in life. They might look down on other people who they think aren't doing all the right things to achieve something. This is a very dangerous mindset because one day, a limitation will happen to them even if it hasn't yet. How will you deal with accepting a limitation if you believe limitations are people's fault? Understanding the limitations are a normal part of everybody's life and are not in any way a failure will help you to cope when you have some form of a limitation.
How to Test Limits
“ Limits, like fears, are often just an illusion.”- Michael Jordan
One thing is true about limitations. You won't know what they are until you test them. You might think that you have a certain limitation, but do you? To find out what the limitations are, do as much as you think you can, and then take a break. While you're taking a break, reassess everything. Then get up and go do more.
Do All You Can
If you want to run a marathon, but you have only run a half marathon, run as far as you can. How far was it? Did you get far enough for the marathon? Maybe you didn't run the length of a whole marathon, but you ran a lot farther than you thought you could. We don't always know our limits. What we know is the amount of things that we usually do. To find out how much you can do beyond what you regularly do, keep going until you can't do anymore.
Just make sure while you're doing as much as you can that you don't overdo it. The goal is to test our limits, not break ourselves. Destroying ourselves trying to do more than what is humanly possible defeats the purpose of testing limits. We test limits to gauge our excellence. We also test limits so that we can make progress. Making ourselves sick, exhausting our resources, or just burning ourselves out does not support these goals. So, while you're doing all you can, be fair with yourself. Doing too much is self-sabotage. If you struggle with sabotaging yourself, read here to find out how to combat that: How to Stop Self Destruction
Rest
One of the biggest secrets to success is balancing hard work with a proper amount of rest. While you're resting from pushing your limitations, you should be thinking about all that you have just done. How much more did you accomplish than what you thought you could, and how do you feel? You might say that you feel proud of yourself and you can't wait to see how much further you can go. Wait. Are you exhausted, or feeling overwhelmed though? When this happens, you have to be fair to yourself. Temporary progress can be offset if you go too far. You don't want that.
While you are resting and assessing your progress doing all you could, ask yourself a few questions. How did going farther than you expected to be able to go and improve things? Did it give you the results that you expected it to? Was doing less actually better, or did doing more improve things? After you have been honest with yourself about these things, ask yourself perhaps the most important question- did you enjoy anything about doing more? If you didn't, feel free to go back to doing less. If doing more than you thought you could makes things better, then it's time to go even farther. One Zodiac sign well known for constantly seeking to improve themselves is Capricorn and you can read about that them here: Capricorn Zodiac Traits and Love Compatibility
Do More
So, you pushed your limits, and were able to achieve more than you thought you could. You rested and reassessed the entire process and discovered that you felt great doing more. Now it's time to go even further and achieve more than you thought you could. Maybe you can't do it on your own, though. Maybe you need a teacher. Maybe you don't need a teacher, but you need a friend to help keep you accountable. Teaming up with someone who has the same goals will give you the encouragement you need. Maybe it will encourage you with a little healthy competition to try harder. Some people don't need a helper, they just need to hold themselves accountable.
A great way to do that is to track your success on paper. If your goal is to move up from a half marathon to a marathon, track exactly how many miles you go each day that you train. Keep a notebook or write it on your calendar. When you see those thirteen plus miles turn to fifteen miles, then twenty miles, and then twenty-six plus miles, you will know that you are making steady progress toward upping your limitations. Some people like to reward themselves with little gifts every time they make progress. For some people, their progress is the only reward that they need. Do it your way while you're pushing your limits and finding out how much you can do. Don't just wish to do more, make your wishes come true. Find out how here: How to Make Your Wish Come True
Pushing Past Limits to Success
“Seize the day. Make your life extraordinary.”- Robin Willimas
Perhaps testing limits and pushing past them is the same thing, but it isn't always. Sometimes pushing your limits has to do with more than just, well, doing more. You have to be open to infinite possibilities when you are trying to push past your limits. You also have to learn to adapt sometimes. Then you have to have the tenacity to try again what it feels like your efforts have failed.
Be Open
Being open to the fact that pushing past limits comes in different ways is very important. Sometimes you will not have thought of something that will be crucial to your success. If you can't think of exactly what, don't be afraid to reach out for advice. Look around you at the people who have accomplished exactly what you want to. How did they do it? To begin with, they didn't learn everything on their own. They watched and learned from other people. A lot of these experts are more than happy to share their knowledge with other people. So, be open to different approaches, but don't forget to be open to reaching out for advice from other people. If you don’t already know how to listen to other people for advice, learn how here: How to Become Great at Listening
Adapt
Changing your approach and your quest for success can determine whether you succeed or fail. If you are stubborn and inflexible and insist that the way that you have always done things is the only way that you will do them, stop. You're not going to make any progress that way. Anything that is worth wanting is worth trying for. Sometimes, a tried and true method is the way to get results. If it's not working, try something else. If your sales team has a goal to make and door to door sales isn't working, if you don't try a different sales technique, you won't make your goal. The purpose of doing something is to accomplish it, not tell people that you did it your way. Sometimes the first way that you try something works, but when it doesn't, adapt. Pisces is one Zodiac sign that's well known for being very adaptable and you can read more about them here: Pisces Zodiac Traits and Love Compatibility
Try Again
Sometimes your efforts pay off immediately, and sometimes they don't. Don't give up. You couldn't run the half marathon the first time you ran could you? You worked up to it. What makes you think you can't meet your goal of a whole marathon if you are patient and keep trying? Maybe you had a minor failure in your quest for career success, but that doesn't mean that you should just quit. Success comes after many attempts, some of which feel like a failure. Having the persistence to keep trying until you succeed is very important. You owe it to yourself to keep going. If you’re worried you will fail, transform that negative thought into something positive. Learn how to do that here:Creating Positive Things from Negative Thoughts
When to Accept Limitations
Most people can push past limitations- as long as they will adapt and try a new approach when they need to, that is. There will come a time in your life when you will not be able to push past a limitation. You may have done your best, made multiple changes, and you still can't push past your limitations. Then what? There is a very strong chance that the universe is calling you to redirect your energies elsewhere. You may have been trying for something that never belonged to you to begin with. You might have been focusing on something that is a part of your past and you are meant for other things in your future.
Sometimes, It's hard to let go of a dream and it's impossible to admit defeat. We have to sometimes though. Your intuition will tell you when it's time to let go. When you have done all you can do, adapted, and things just aren't working out, adapt further by moving on. Limitations are not personal failures. They are just reality sometimes. When limitations hold you back, allow yourself to focus on areas of your life where you are not limited, and thrive there. Just because you are limited in one area doesn't mean you should limit your enjoyment of life in other areas.
Everybody has limitations, but not everybody has the courage to test them and work around them, achieving success despite boundaries. When the reality of some limitation presents itself to you, don’t run away from it. Face it head on. Adapt if you need to, finding new ways to reach your goals, and watch yourself accomplish more than you ever dreamed of. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain. So what are you waiting for? Move forward and claim what is already yours, waiting on the other side of one little limitation.
