What’s an Amulet?

Amulets are good luck charms that bring protection. Throughout history, people have used amulets. Anything can be an amulet and it is supposed to draw protection. They draw their power from the very nature of the material they are made of, or the images that they're made of. Some people will pray over amulets or bless them. They repel negative energies, evil, or bad experiences. They can be made from any material including bone, plants, paper, wood, metal precious or semi precious stones, and even glass or plastic. Some of the most common amulets are in the form of symbols of faith, some type of symbol, or statues.

Symbols of Faith

Symbols of Faith

Ancient Egyptians used the Eye of Horus which is believed to have protective power. They used it to paint on coffins as well as on the bows of boats. People would wear it for protection also. The Ancient Greek and Roman gods were represented by certain precious stones. Bacchus was represented on amethyst for example. They also use boxes filled with things to repel evil. Crucifixes are often born by Christians or used to adorn homes or churches to repel evil. Wiccans will wear the symbol of their faith, the pentacle to protect themselves or images of the goddess. Symbols

Different symbols offer the same protection to repel evil. Ancient Celts used iron to repel malevolent spirits, and today's people will place an iron horseshoe over their door. The celts also had the triquetra symbol that offered protection. The tree of life symbolizes ancestry, family, and a bond with the earth. This is used to repel evil. The hamsa is a sacred amulet that represents the Hand of God and is believed to block evil and protect. The nazar is easily recognizable as a blue white and black eye also known as the evil eye symbol that repels against bad luck and negative energy. Although it originated in ancient Greece it is used around the world today. Read about the symbolism of lions here; Lion Meaning and Spiritual Symbolism

Statues

Statues, most especially of gods, goddesses, or illustrious holy saints are used to repel evil. Statues of Saint Lazarus are asked for protection against disease and leprosy and for recovery from illness. The goddess Kali Ma’s statue can help repel evil, negativity, and even ignorance. Statues of Jesus do not particularly protect people physically, but it reminds devotees to reject temptation, therefore repelling evil deeds. A statue of the Mesopotamian goddess Ishtar will give protection from enemies, chaos, or injustice for individuals and communities. A statue of the Norse God Odin can repel against being unwise, being uneducated, or being cowardly. Read about some goddesses and gods of peace here; Athena and Other Gods and Goddesses of Peace

What’s a Talisman?

Talismans are things that attract positive energy, good experiences, luck, or blessings. Like amulets, they can be worn or carried, or placed somewhere the good things are desired. They can bring in the blessings of deities, and good experiences like a healthy pregnancy, spiritual strength, or even to increase wealth. Examples of talismans include prayer beads, magical grimoires or holy books, and various sacred objects.

Prayer Beads

Used in many religions from ancient to modern times, prayer beads are a string or set of beads used to help religious devotees count the repetitions of their prayers. Seeds, pods, precious and semiprecious stones, knotted rope or string, and beads from clay or synthetic materials are the most common materials used to make prayer beads. Each bead or knot is used to help the devotee remember which prayer they are supposed to do next. For example, the Catholic rosary has 59 beads guiding the person praying through a series of ten Hail Mary prayers, multiple Glory Be prayers, and the Apostle’s or Nicene Creed. Praying with the rosary allows one to focus their mind on certain deep mysteries of faith instead of counting how many prayers they have done. Prayer beads help the devotee focus their prayers, thus bringing them spiritually closer to their goddess or god. Working with spirit guides can bring you closer to your higher power as well. Grimoires and Holy Books

Grimoires and Holy Books

Studying opens the mind to spiritual guidance, and bestows wisdom. These things are seen as lucky, sacred, and ways to grow spiritually. Spiritual books, in this way serve as talismans, bringing in better parts of your spirituality, and improving every aspect of your life. They teach you better behavior, help you get along with other people better, and they strengthen your relationship with your higher power. They also explaine the way that the universe works, tell you where people come from, and where we are going in the afterlife. Holy books can even help you find the way to enlightenment. Find out more about enlightenment here: The Path to Enlightenment

Objects

Lucky rabbit’s feet, four leaf clovers, and other things are believed to be naturally blessed with luck and good energy. Symbols of faith like pentacles, crucifixes, and Stars of David actually serve to both repel evil and bring in blessings, so they are both amulets and talismans. Colors are even said to be lucky and to bring good things. For example, red is traditionally considered to be a lucky color that evokes a powerful life force to many people. Different plants like bamboo and the jade plant are believed to bring good luck and positive energy. Plants of all forms, unless they are toxic, are the perfect things to use to bring good things. Plants cleanse the earth, providing oxygen, most especially trees. Is everything alive? Find out here: Animism: Is Everything Alive?

What’s the Difference?

In a way, talismans and amulets are used for the same thing- that is to make your life magically or spiritually better. They do this in different ways. Talismans attract positive things, and amulets repel undesirable things. So, the best way to use them is to use them together. For example, say you want to bring more love into your life, but you need to rid yourself of the negativity from an ugly breakup. So, wear an amulet, like hematite, which blocks energy to repel your ex, then use a talisman such as a bag filled with lavender and rose quartz to attract lovers. Talismans and amulets are both used in magic. Find out more about magic here: Using Practical Magic in Everyday Life

What They Aren’t

There are things talismans and amulets don’t do. They are only designed to supplement your efforts and won’t fix everything by themselves. You can shut out malevolent energy and bring in good energy, but if you associate with people that are bad news, no talisman or amulet will keep you from the harm they cause. If you are struggling with a negative coworker, you can block their energy, but it won't make their behavior stop. They also won't work against your bad decisions. If you're trying to give up sugar because you are diabetic, talismans and ambulets won't keep you from the consequences if you eat sugar. So, use them accordingly, but don't think that they do everything. One bad decision you could make is to go back to a bad ex- but what does it mean if you have dreams about them? How to Make Amulets

After all this talk about what amulets are and aren't, it might have you wondering how to get one. The best way is to always make your own. If you are an artist, paint or draw. Maybe you're more into three dimensional things and you'd rather make a statue. I you'd prefer something to wear, make your own pendant.

Paint or Draw

If your amulet to repel negativity or evil is going to focus on a deity or a spirit, it's best to make an image of them. It doesn't matter if you're not a professional artist. The purpose of making an image of a god or goddess or a spirit yourself is to bond with them. While you are creating their image on paper or canvas, listen to music that is devoted to them, or chant. Read about them during the days that you are making their portrait, and speak aloud to them asking for guidance and love. The number one thing you should do is relax your mind so that you can listen to any messages that come to you while you're doing this portrait.

Reading about the traditional attributes of this spiritual being and the things that other people use to portray them is important. However, don't forget that this is a personal portrait that helps to create a relationship. Listen to the messages that they give to you about how you should portray them. One woman did a painting of a god with rainbow colors on it because she saw a rainbow reflected on the canvas right before she began. Another woman got the message to paint a snake and a lock and key on the portrait of some spirits. There is no wrong way to paint your portrait for your image of your protective spirit. Do it your way.

Make a Statue

Make a Statue

Using the same methods that you could use and drawing in painting a portrait of your goddess, god, or spirit, make a statue. You don't necessarily have to make a statue that's permanent. You could make one out of bird seed and leave it out as an offering for the nature spirits. You can make one in the sand at the beach to protect yourself. You could always make one permanently though. Clay, paper mâché, wire, metal work, or even beads can be used to make any kind of statue you want. Use feathers, paint, mirrors, or anything you want. Let your imagination guide you.

Make a Pendant

Some people like their amulets to be pendants, because they can keep those on them at all times. Various semi-precious stones block negativity including smoky quartz, black Onyx, and hematite. You can use wire wrapping, or simply tie a string in such a way that would hold your semi-precious stone on a necklace. You can also make an amulet pendant with a small bag filled with herbs. Juniper, black pepper, sage, cedar, bay, and rosemary are all things that ward off negativity. If you are good at beading, string some beads on a necklace to wear.

How to Make Talismans

Talismans will bring in good things. Anything can be a Talisman if you know how to blust things properly. The most powerful Talisman that you can possess as your own garden filled with plants that bless and heal. You can also do prayers over any object that you want, or have them blessed by holy people or in sacred spaces.

Plant a Garden

Plants have been used to bless and bring in luck for generations. Chamomile not only makes a relaxing tea, but it draws abundance, so make sure to include it in your garden. The money tree plant is believed to attract wealth, as is the bay. The peace lily brings clarity and calm and is a great lucky garden addition. Roses are believed to draw love, and peonies bring prosperity and good fortune. The aloe plant symbolizes healing and is used in salves to treat things like burns. A kitchen garden with all your favorite herbs is lucky because growing your own herbs will save you money!

Pray Over It

Anything can be a talisman. Anything at all. All you have to do is bless it with prayers. You can create your own prayer for blessing things, and use that prayer for everything that you want to bless. However, you can also use this prayer: “ In the name of my guides and teachers, and the power within myself, I bless the subject that it may attract health, much wealth, good fortune, joy and love, and that it may bestow upon me the power to overcome all obstacles and suffering.”

Use Sacred Spaces

Your own energy is good for blessing things, but there is already a lot of energy around in groves, churches, mosques, temples, and all forms of sanctuaries. Simply take your talisman there, and let it sit in the sacred space to absorb some of its energy. You can even use the sun. To help you get a job, allow full sunlight to touch the clothes that you're going to wear to a job interview so that the magic of the sun of success and wealth will bless the clothing.

Talismans and amulets are things that people have used since the dawn of time. Amulets repel negativity and talismans draw positive things. Anything can be used for this. You can use the symbols of your faith, plants, semi precious stones, or artwork that you make as your own sacred objects to protect and bless you with good things. You don't have to spend a lot of money to protect and bless yourself if you make your own amulets and talismans.
