What’s a Blue Jay?

What’s a Blue Jay?

Blue Jays are small songbirds that are native to North America. They're called Blue Jays because of their blue and white feathers and word, “jay” refers to the fact that they're noisy and chatty. Some blue jays migrate in flocks of up to 250 birds. Larger predators like raccoons, squirrels, and snakes like to eat blue jays and their eggs. So, Blue Jays take safety very seriously, and they will give warning alarm calls if a predator comes into their territory. These serve as a warning for other blue jays of course, but other small creatures respond to the warnings and seek safe cover when they hear it. They are very intelligent, and like to collect shiny or brightly colored objects and carry them around. They also know how to use strips of newspaper to help them get food and if captured try to figure out how to open the doors of the cage that they're in.

They eat mostly vegetation such as seeds, grains, and corn as well as peanuts, but have been known to eat eggs, meat, and other birds nestlings. They prefer to build their nests in evergreens between 10 and 33 feet off the ground, but they've been known to build their nests in unconventional places like empty mailboxes. They don't mind moving into other birds’ nests, and they seem to favor American Robin’s nests. Blue jays bond for life and both males and females participate in building the nest and rearing the young. Blue jays typically live about 7 years, but they have been known to live up to 26 years in the wild. They can mimic human language, and they make a lot of different sounds when they're chirping.

Blue Jay Symbolism

Blue jays symbolize a lot of different things to a lot of different people. They symbolize protection and good luck, and they also symbolize the powers of creation. They are symbolic of happiness and tenacity, and they also represent and bring warnings.

Luck and Protection

Some people believe that when a blue jay appears to you, that they are an omen that good things are coming your way, and some people even believe that blue jays bring good luck all on their own. Some people believe that seeing a blue jay before sunrise or sunset means that positive change is coming. Some people believe that seeing a blue jay means that their god is watching over them, and that they are divinely protected. Blue jays are also believed to be creatures who guide the spirits of the dead to the afterlife, protecting them on the journey to make sure that they don't get lost. Creation

Creation

In the American South, some folk tales say that the blue jay made the earth when there our planet was nothing but water. The blue jay did this by bringing the first soil to the planet. Some folk tales say that the blue jay helped the devil by gathering twigs on Friday to help stoke Hell's fires, but the blue Jay was also credited with giving fire to human beings. The fact that both male and female blue jays build the nest, and that blue jays gather trinkets makes them seem like they're always creating things. Happiness

Blue jays also represent happiness. Perhaps because of how much they sang and how chatty they are, they seem like happy little creatures. They also carry messages of happiness. It is believed that if a blue jay is perched on a tree above you singing, it's bringing you happy messages, so pay attention. Persistence

Some people believe that blue jays teach the ability to keep trying to reach your goals no matter how difficult things get. While some blue jay species migrate, some don't. They can adapt to all four seasons and survive and thrive no matter how bad the weather is. Blue jays are known to be aggressive towards other species, and they're not afraid to fight to protect their families. To a brave little blue jay, it seems that no threat is too frightening, and no goal is unattainable. Warnings

Warnings

Blue jays can also bring warnings. Seeing a blue Jay, especially if it's singing in an especially agitated way could be a warning that somebody is gossiping about you or saying bad things about you behind your back. They could also be warning you to protect yourself. Lies, slander, and attempts to destroy you could be going on when you see a blue jay. Someone might be betraying your trust, and someone might be cheating on you. While some people would see this as blue jays being bad luck, it's actually good luck because blue jays are revealing the truth. What Do Dreams About Blue Jays Mean?

When you dream about blue jays, the dreams could be bringing messages of any of the things that the birds symbolize. However, if you pay attention to the specific details in your dreams, you will have a better idea of exactly what they're trying to tell you. When you dream about blue jays flying, it means something different than dreams about their nests. Dreams about singing blue jays bring special messages and so do dreams about blue jay feathers. It is perhaps dreams about two blue jays that bring some of the most welcome messages.

The Blue Jay Spirit Animal

Some people believe in spirit animals. These are animals that human beings share a spiritual connection with, and we learn a lot from them. Not everybody has a kinship with all the same animals, but everybody has at least one kind of spirit animal. When the blue Jay is your spirit animal, it teaches you to be tenacious, overcoming any obstacle that's in your way. It teaches you to be protective of your loved ones, and it teaches you to create the world that you want to see. Blue jays also teach you how to make your own luck, and keep your eyes and ears open for any hidden dangers that may threaten you. How can you find out what your spirit animal is? Some people simply say prayers or do deep meditations to try and find out which animals are their spirit animals. Other people just instinctively know and can't remember the moment that they discovered what their spirit animal was. If you're trying to find out what your spirit animal is, one simple way to do that is to go out in nature. Plan to be outside for an hour or more each week, no matter what the weather is, and go for a walk in nature. Pay attention to which animals approach you, and which ones you feel drawn to. You might discover your spirit animal on your very first walk or it could take a while. Take as long as you need, and you will discover what your spirit animal is. Do Blue Jays Need Our Help?

Blue jays are not endangered, but the main threat to blue jays and all birds in general is human beings. There are things we do that unintentionally hurt birds, and there are things we can easily do to reduce that threat. As many as 1 billion birds are killed by colliding with windows every year in the United States alone. They see the clear glass and they don't understand that it is a barrier. You can reduce birds' risk of injury or death by colliding with windows by placing screens to shade your windows or putting decals and stickers on the windows to show them that it's clear air. As many as 2/3 of North America’s birds die because of climate change. Reduce your use of fossil fuels by carpooling, walking more places, and turning your heat cooler in winter and your air conditioner warmer in summer.
