What is Hypnosis?
Hypnosis is an altered state of mind where the person who's being hypnotized has heightened concentration and focus and it's more open to suggestions. Hypnotic induction techniques are usually used to get someone into a hypnotic trance state. Some hypnotists are actually just psychotherapists who know how to use relaxation techniques to make somebody more open to suggestions. Some hypnotists say that it is not necessarily to induce someone into a trance to hypnotize them. Some say that most effective hypnosis sessions include having the individual recline, relax, and first focus their visual attention on an object and then close their eyes.
Focus of the conscious mind onto a single idea as one of the techniques used in hypnosis. Hypnotism is designed to trigger responses that affect behaviour from moments, days, months, or for the rest of your life. Some fictional television shows or movies show hypnotists getting people to do outrageously funny things while they have them hypnotized, but hypnotism was not designed for such antics. It is used therapeutically to help people improve their lives. Some people say that hypnosis relies on someone to be in a state of heightened suggestibility by simply focusing their attention. Changes in the brain have been detected after successful hypnosis. Areas of the brain used for imagination or more strongly activated during hypnotism and parts of the brain that process conflict are activated strongly also. The Benefits of Hypnosis
Hypnosis has a lot of benefits for the person being hypnotized. It is so effective, it is used by a lot of medical doctors today. How does hypnosis help? It helps to sharpen your focus when you are working towards goals. It improves your physical health, and believe it or not, hypnosis can be included in your treatment program to improve your mental health.
Sharpening Focus
When you relax deeply, and take your mind off distractions, it is easier to focus. Hypnotism helps with that. When someone is hypnotizing you, they will verbally guide you through topics. They don't take control of you, making you easy to manipulate. They take away some fears and anxiety that you may be having, and focus on just one topic. Your hypnotist will bring you to a point of deep relaxation and then take you even deeper into it. Your mind will be very open to suggestion at that time and your hypnotist can use this time to help you think about what it is you would like to focus on.
Your hypnotists might also explore what is going on that's taking you away from concentrating on what you want to do. During these sessions they can give you tips for breaking away from distractions and they might even give you tools to help you to get an hypnotic mindset before you get started on what you're working on outside of your sessions. Some psychics are good at helping with these things also. Are psychics legit? Find out here: Are Psychics Real?
Health Improvement
You can improve your own health through hypnosis. Whether you want to quit smoking, train yourself to reject negativity, or lose weight, the mental boost that hypnosis provides can help. During hypnosis, you will be given suggestions and techniques to help you work on your health. You may be given some mantras to chant to help you and you may also be taught techniques for listening to your body. Some people swear that hypnosis helps them with diabetes, symptoms of menopause, and chronic pain. Hypnosis can even help you heal from past trauma. Improved Mental Health
Perhaps the biggest success with hypnotism has been made with mental health care. Anxiety, depression, and self esteem issues can be remedied through hypnosis. Deep relaxation can be achieved during hypnosis promoting a sense of calm or redirecting your worries from mental health problems to mental health management. Phobias and fears can be tackled by exploring what triggered them in the past. The relaxation that hypnosis teaches can help your sleep improve which can improve your overall mental health. Negative thought patterns can be broken through during hypnosis. Learn about facing your fears here: Facing and Overcoming Fears
Is Hypnosis Dangerous?
Can hypnosis cause problems? If a manipulative individual convinces you to do something that doesn’t benefit you, it can. Hypnosis only works if you consent to it. The people who lie, coerce, or appeal to your emotions to get you to do things are easily detected and can be told no. Nobody can make you do things without your consent, and even during hypnosis, when you are relaxed, you can refuse any suggestions anybody may give.
Some people say that hypnosis invites demons into your life and opens you up for sin. Some people believe that hypnosis forces you to do things against your will that you would never do if you were not hypnotized. Again, you choose how you act. No hypnotists can force you to do anything, and you will not lose control of yourself. Hypnosis opens your mind through relaxation. It does not open a portal to a malevolent world, nor are you trapped, forced to do things that evil people bid you to do. Evil spirits aren’t the creatures that pop culture poetry them as. So what are they? Read here to find out: What’s a Demon? The Truth About Wicked Spirits
Hypnosis also isn't an instant fix. Some people see success in just one hypnosis session, that other people combine hypnosis with other therapies like cognitive behavior therapy. Hypnosis can be used as a tool to explore painful memories that may have been hidden from the conscious mind. It is also used to explore emotion or suffering that is on the surface. Unconscious effects of trauma can be uncovered through hypnosis. Discussions about healing techniques, or ideas to create transformations can be explored during hypnosis also. Just don't expect to have everything in your life perfect after one hypnosis section. Hypnosis is just a part of the process. How to Perform Hypnosis
Hypnosis can be performed through the guidance of a professional practitioner using the four classic stages of hypnotism, but there are some hypnosis techniques that you can do yourself. Self hypnosis can include positive affirmations, taking baby steps to a goal, or getting yourself into trance. Ways to hypnotize other people include encouraging them, personalizing your communication with them so that they will be more open to suggestions, and validating what they have said or done.
The Classic Stages
There are four classic stages of hypnosis from inducing a trance state, to emerging out of trance.
Induction
Induction begins hypnosis. A hypnotist will help you start relaxing and then focus your attention. They might have you focus your thoughts on something's specific, relax your breathing, and release any tension from your muscles.
Deepening
Deepening is an advanced stage of relaxation. Your therapist may use visualization like counting back from ten or walking down a staircase to get deeper into the hypnotic state.
Suggestions
Next comes the whole purpose of hypnotism, suggestions. These are suggested changes to behavior. They may suggest that you change your thinking, or your responses. They may suggest a behavioral change, or even request that your body starts healing itself.
Emergence
Once your hypnotist decides that you are ready to come out of your hypnotic state, they will wake you up. This means they will bring you back to full consciousness and out of the hypnotic state. They may have you count forwards again and emerge when you finish counting or visualize that you are climbing a stairwell out of hypnotism. Some people are easily guided out by being told “Come out of the hypnotic state now.”
Self Hypnosis
You may decide not to include other people in your hypnosis. You can hypnotize yourself. There are things that you can do for self hypnosis every day no matter where you are and they don't take very long to do. Positive affirmations should be a part of your daily practice, and if you're having difficulty taking steps to make things happen, then take baby steps before you accomplish the whole thing. Finally, for relaxation, learn how to enter a trance state on your own.
Affirmations
Positive affirmations are words of encouragement to yourself. When you tell yourself that you have the ability to do something over and over again, you will start to believe yourself. If you tell yourself that you are weak, incapable, or somehow unfit to do something, you might not even have the courage to try. It is very important to tell yourself good things, because words have power. If you want to transform, or meet a goal, uplift yourself by believing in yourself and encourage yourself with positive affirmations. Sometimes this is the only hypnosis you need.
Baby Steps
When you want to do something, it can seem very intimidating. Maybe you can't climb a mountain today, but you can do a climbing wall. Then, you can climb a hill with a rock face. Next, you can take classes to learn from professional climbers. Pretty soon you will have climbed your first mountain. Do a little bit at a time until you meet your goal. Speaking of taking things one step at a time, learn about walking your path, even when you fear you may have strayed: Am I Still on the Path That’s Right for Me?
Use Trance
For some people, affirmations and baby steps aren't enough. They need to relax their mind by getting into a trance state to hypnotize themselves. One way to do this is through deep breathing and completely shutting out all distractions while you are working towards something. Ascending that mountain completely relaxed and focusing only on the climb instead of looking down in fear is a perfect state of trance. Listening to music, chanting a mantra, or focusing on your breathing are other good trance induction methods.
Hypnotizing Other People
Did you know that you don't have to be a professional hypnotist to use some of their techniques to help other people? Three simple techniques that you can use to hypnotize people include encouragement, personalizing your message, or validating them.
Encouragement
One of the best ways to hypnotize somebody is to give them encouragement. People may come to you for support in quitting smoking, overcoming a fear, or working up the courage to ask their crush out on a date. Looking them straight in the eye, tell them they can do it. A script like “I know this seems difficult, but I also know you. I know that you can do this because this is something that belongs in your life and you have everything it takes to achieve this.” If you know this person well, you can even offer to be available before and after their efforts to cheer them on and celebrate their victory with them. Sometimes the people who will encourage you most are your friends. Read about the love of friends here: All About the Love of Friends
Personalization
If people believe you care about them personally, they are more likely to be persuaded. Touch and eye contact are effective tools to use in hypnosis. A handshake to establish contact can be good-unless you know someone does not like to be touched. Respecting someone’s personal space by either offering the courtesy of contact like standing close or a handshake or giving them space will help. Remembering their name is also an effective way to make people believe you have their best interests in mind.
Validation
Sometimes when people are healing, having somebody validate their feelings is the most important part of that process. Was there ever a time when you needed help learning to trust yourself? Who was there for you, validating that you were on the right path? That validation hypnotized you, or helped you to move forward on your path. Who do you know that needs that type of validation now? To validate them, listen without judgment, let them say all that they need to, and confirm to them that they are on the right path. Watch them excel beyond self doubts after this form of hypnosis.
Hypnotism is not the mysterious parlor tricks that fiction portrays it to be. It's a real form of psychological therapy that is used to help people make lasting positive changes in their lives. It is used for healing past traumas, helping improve physical and mental health, and helping you to transform. Some people are afraid that a hypnotist can gain full control over them, but nobody can make you do anything without your consent. You can see a hypnotist, hypnotize yourself, or hypnotize other people by encouraging them or validating their feelings. If you believe that self hypnotism will help you, don’t wait.
