What’s a Storm?

What’s a Storm?

A storm is a disruption of normal weather. They can include warm, hot, cool, or cold weather storms. They don’t just happen in the sky. They affect life on earth. Things like sleet that causes treacherously icy grounds impedes movement for animals and people alike. Heavy rainfall can cause decreased visibility and flooding. It can wash out crops, create famine, or wash away homes. High winds can likewise destroy both animal’s and people’s homes, and knock out electricity.

The National Weather Service showed startling statistics for fatalities from weather. Heat, by far caused the most fatalities, but various storms were shown to also. Floods were second to the top of the list, but things like lightning, winds, and rip currents can be deadly too. The reason storms are so terrifying when they are severe is there is nothing we can do about them. Many just wait till the storm passes, and pray they survive with minimal damage. See the chart here: Weather Related Fatality and Injury Statistics

What Makes a Storm Severe?

The intensity of the energy in the atmosphere determines the severity of a storm. High atmospheric pressure, instability of cool and warm air that may combine, or air lifting or shifting quickly can cause severe storms. Winds of 58 miles per hour or more, hail one inch of diameter or larger, or things like cold frosts can cause air or rain to get severe quickly. In simpler terms, we don’t always measure wind speed or inches in water when we look at the effects of a storm. We measure the damage it causes.

Spiritually, something that seems small to most people could devastate one person, and that makes it severe for them. A soft rain that washes away newly planted seeds in the garden feels severe although rain waters the ground. A light snow accompanying frost that kills newly emerging tomato seedlings feels severe even if it doesn’t damage anything else. Lightning that splits the sky but doesn’t strike the ground feels severe when it causes a panic attack in one person. Crystals won’t cure panic attacks, but they help some people. The Storms of Life

The troubles of life are sometimes compared to a storm. When a storm hits, there is nothing that can be done about it. Similarly, in life, bad things will happen that we have no control over. Whether it is a severe storm or a difficult situation, all we can do is brace ourselves for impact, and ride it out. After a severe storm or life’s difficulties, we emerge, assess the damage, and do our best to put our lives, homes, and sanity back together.

These severe storms of life shake us to the core, and change us. Feeling trapped in a volatile environment that could destroy all we have and even take our lives is one of the most powerless feelings we will ever experience. Some people change by becoming more grateful for surviving and going forward, they seek to make the most out of the rest of their lives. Others change by becoming angry with the way things are. Why do such things happen to us? Who has decided life, the earth, and things in general will be this way sometimes? Some people believe Kali Ma , a powerful Hindu goddess, is behind it all. The Spiritual Meaning of Severe Storms

Besides representing the storms of life, different types of severe storms have their own spiritual meaning. From the damage severe storms cause, to the meaning of thunderstorms, and the meaning of hail, storms mean countless spiritual things. Read on to find the mystical spiritual meaning of ten different kinds of severe storms.

Storm Damage Meaning

Storm Damage Meaning

Storm damage represents the universe clearing dead things away. A storm can seem like it damages perfectly good things sometimes, doesn’t it? However, if something is good, strong, and serves a purpose, when something destroys it, that means something better awaits. Sometimes, we are too comfortable in situations we have grown beyond. The universe has a way of making us uncomfortable enough to get up and move forward. Storm damage represents the things that move us forward when it’s time.

Torrential Rain Meaning

Torrential rain symbolizes an intense outpouring of divine blessings. They say when it rains, it pours. That's good when the blessings and good luck come pouring down. At first, you may be so overwhelmed by these things because you weren't expecting. Once the rains or blessings stop and begin to settle, you will understand how good they really are. Even torrential rains that seem to wash things away sink into the ground and nourish plants. One thing you want an abundance of is life lessons you can learn from. Strong Wind Meaning

Spiritually, wind represents the lifeforce, also called the breath of life. It can speak to us when we least expect it. Strong winds represent the lifeforce speaking loudly to us, bringing us much needed messages. When strong winds appear, search your heart and listen extra closely to your intuition. What messages from the universe have been whispered to you? The messages are about to become louder. Rest assured, this is the universe guiding you and these messages are exactly what you need to hear.

Thunderstorm Meaning

Thunderstorms represent power and authority. Whenever thunder seems especially powerful, it means the universe is guiding you to speak up, using your voice to make sure good things get done. Spiritual meaning aside, a 30/30 rule can help keep you safe from thunderstorms. If you see lightning, count how long it takes to hear thunder. If you count 30 seconds or less, the thunderstorm is close enough that you could be in danger. Wait 30 minutes or longer after that initial sighting of lightning before leaving shelter to stay safe from the storm. Lightning Meaning

Lightening represents sudden changes, instant realization, and powerful action through focused energy. Anytime you make a groundbreaking decision in an instant, that is they type of thing lightening represents. A ‘lightening bolt” of sudden deep understanding of something might “hit” so quickly it jolts you to action. Powerful action through focused energy can shock people into action, or impress them with your ambition. Like lightning suddenly illuminates the dark night sky and strikes the ground without warning, your “lightning fast” reaction to something can bring sudden, necessary changes.

Flooding Meaning

Flooding stands for an overabundance of something that creates destruction. Alcoholism, overeating, overspending money, hoarding, or anything done in excess cause problems. This symbolism, spiritually, is a reminder that there is such a thing as TOO much of a good thing. When you get a psychic vision of floods, or images of a flood that has happened stands out to you, it’s meaningful. Hail Meaning

Hail is particles of ice that fall from storm clouds. It often forms and falls during thunderstorms and happens when a strong, upward motion of the air in the storm called an updraft carries water to collide with supercooled water. They continue to accumulate more ice until they are too heavy to remain in the sky, and they fall to earth. In Runes, this is symbolized by Haglaz, the rune for elemental destruction. Like hail, destruction comes quickly, but melts, and you are left to pick up the pieces afterwards. Spiritually hail represents just this- destruction, but also the time of renewal that comes afterwards. The dreams about hail tell you to hang in there, recover from whatever went wrong, and go forward strongly.

Snowstorms Meaning

Snowstorms represent spiritual pauses, or resets in life. Think of what snowstorms cause. They stop us in our tracks. Severe snowstorms can bury entire towns, forcing people to hole up, wait for the snow to stop, and dig their way out before commencing daily life outside of the home. Spiritually, this symbolizes taking a break from everyday life, and retreating within for deep spiritual contemplation. Spiritual growth is something that can happen all the time, but we don't always pause and pay attention to these things because we are so busy going through the motions of everyday life. When a major snowstorm hits, use it as a time to think deeply and pay attention to spiritual messages. That means you will have to be patient and wait. Tsunami Meaning

Tsunamis happen when some force of nature causes water in a body of water to forcefully come inland. An example is the Indian Ocean Tsunami of 2004. An earthquake triggered a tsunami with waves of up to 100 feet in height, affecting people in 14 countries, killing over 200,000 people. Not only was it the deadliest tsunami in recorded history, it is one of the deadliest natural disasters in recorded history. Tsunamis represent widespread, uncontrollable chaos. There is no beneficial symbolism of tsunamis. Tsunamis represent running for your life and escaping a horrible situation- if it’s possible. When tsunami symbolism happens, get out of a bad situation any way you can.

Dust Storms Meaning

Dust storms represent suffocating conditions that choke out life. They represent bad things brewing, and are an ominous warning to stifling situations. This can be a toxic job, an abusive relationship, or a dead-end living situation. When dust storm symbolism appears, take a long hard look at things in your life, and objectively identify that which is snuffing out your energy and life force. Get rid of it. Setting boundaries might help if you can’t escape immediately. Find out how to set boundaries when you never learned how here: How to Set a Relationship Boundary

Isn’t a Storm Just a Storm?

Isn’t a Storm Just a Storm

Some people say a storm is just a storm and trying to read deeper meaning into it is overthinking things. Spiritual people disagree. Some people believe that everything has spiritual meaning. There is significance in the seasons, the signs that we get from our spirit animals, the deep meanings of people's words, and even in our own astrological birth chart. Storms have happened throughout history, and they will happen after each of us has left this world. So a major storm isn't just a message for one person.

However, storms carry deep symbolism and meanings just like anything else. Some people believe that nature in and of itself is a part of the body of the creator. These people watch for small signs and symbols in everything. For them, something as simple as flash flooding could be a message from the powers that be. Other people say a storm is just a storm. Maybe sometimes it is, but maybe sometimes it has a message for you. So listen.

Severe Storm Dreams

When you dream about severe storms, the symbolism of the type of storm should first be consulted. If that particular severe storm meaning does not seem to make sense with the specific details of the dream, it could mean a few different things. Severe storms are scary. A lot of times, when we have nightmares, it is because we are having a lot of stress in life. Our minds may simply be replaying our worries in our sleep when we dream of severe storms. Then again, that may not be the meaning of severe storm dreams at all. Crack open the volumes of our encyclopedia of dream meanings here: A-Z Dream Meanings Glossary

The dreams may be prophetic. The details of the dream might be warning you of bad times to come. Pay special attention to any protective measures you take in the dream. Do you hide out, sheltering somewhere safe during the severe storm dream? Do you venture out, facing the storm head on? Are you terrified in the dream, with no place to shelter safely, but survive unharmed anyhow? Anytime you survive in a severe weather dream, no matter how bad the storm was, it is a sign from the universe that you are more powerful than anything that could threaten you. Maybe the storm should be afraid of you!

Severe storms happen on their own, but they have deep spiritual meanings. Severe storm related weather like torrential rains, snowstorms, and lightning represent things we deal with in life like transformation, spiritual rest, and powerful changes. Dreams of severe storms may be alluding to the symbolism of whatever type of storm you dream about, but it might be a psychic dream forewarning you to major changes in life. You should follow the instructions you receive in your dream. May the storms of life clear away things you have grown beyond, and may the aftermath of the storm bring new opportunities. So Be It.
