What are Meteors?

What are Meteors?

Also known as shooting stars, meteors are small bodies, usually meteoroids, traveling through our planet’s atmosphere. Collisions with molecules in the upper atmosphere will have heated them so much they reach a point called incandescence. They create a beautiful glowing streak as they move along, and shed particles on their trip. Many of their particles are as small as a single piece of sand, and a lot of the particles burn up and dissolve before reaching earth. The pieces that survive and make it to the surface are called meteorites.

Do you think that you may have found a meteorite? There are ways to tell. Meteorites are typically heavier than most rocks found on earth. They have magnetic qualities. They have a thick, glassy coating on them that may have a melted look. They have shallow indentations that may look like thumbprints, and they typically either leave no streak or just a light grey streak when scraped across a ceramic tile. Are Meteors Dangerous?

Considering the fact the earth has millions of meteors moving along our atmosphere daily, seeing a meteor is no reason to be alarmed. It sounds scary, but it really isn’t. In a way, these meteors create a lot of the natural world we belong to. Over 48,000 tons of meteoric materials fall to earth daily. Yes, every day, even though a lot of what falls dissolves before it reaches the ground. If the meteoric material did not reach the planet things would be very different. So, next time someone tells you the earth is completely separate from space, you will know better.

When Do Meteors Happen?

Meteors happen all the time. The special conditions needed for them to happen are not that unique. They are noticeable to us when they are 47 to 75 miles above the surface of the earth. A lot of them don’t reach earth though, because most of them dissolve by the time they are as little as 31 miles above the surface. A lot of people think they only happen at night because their glowing trails are easier to see when it’s dark, but they happen in daytime too. Keep in mind, their heat and gasses only glow for a second in time- a single second- so they are happening in the atmosphere often, we just don’t see them, so we can’t tell. Something else that happens in the atmosphere is a tornado, and you can read about their spiritual meaning here: The Spiritual Meaning of a Tornado

Meteor Myths and Folklore

Different people throughout history have had different ideas of what meteors are. To the ancient Romans, meteors were messages from the gods. To the ancient Greeks, they were signs of the activities of the gods and demi-gods. To some First Nations people of the Americas, meteors meant different things.

The Roman Empire

The Roman Empire

It is said that during the funerary games held in honor of Julius Caesar, a comet that was observed nearby was used by Octavian, later known as the Emperor Agustus to his benefit. Octavian was the son of Caesar, and he claimed the meteor was a sign from the heavens that Caesar was deified as a god. He was able to use this as a way to increase his own power. Agustus didn’t need the help, though. He was such a good ruler, he brought about the Roman Empire and a period of peace called the Pax Romanus. He ruled until his death.

Greek Myths

The ancient Greeks had their own myths about meteors. Helios is their god who drives the chariot with the sun across the sky. His son, Phaethon decided to try to drive the chariot once himself. He failed epically, driving the chariot too close to earth, scorching areas. Father god Zeus struck Phaethon from the sky with a lightning bolt, and shooting stars represent his fall from the sky. Orion was a giant and a hunter said to be the son of Poseidon, god of the sea. A meteor shower called the Orionids seems to originate near the constellation named after him and it was believed when there were shooting stars during that event, it is him shooting arrows at prey. First Nations Lore

It is said it is a Lakota belief that shooting stars are the souls of ancestors. It is said the Navajo believe shooting stars are the souls of the departed. It is said the Pomo of California believe meteors are fire from the heavens. The Luisene of California are said to believe meteors are stars on the move. The Shawnee are said to believe meteors are stars fleeing from danger. The Chumash are said to believe meteors are souls on their way to the afterlife.

If it’s time to give someone a gift, give them the thing you know they have been dreaming of. Sometimes, moderation is key, but sometimes, you have to indulge yourself and the ones you love. A REALLY big one. A sonic boom can literally rock people’s world, if only for a moment. When you hear a sonic boom, you are being called to make a big statement, a big impression, or say something you have been needing to that may shock people. Sometimes, we need to whisper, and sometimes, we need to boom!

These might be very good changes.

Meaning of the Leonids

The Leonides are a meteor shower that peaks every mid-November. Every 33 years, there could be hundreds or thousands of meteors per hour observed depending on where you are on earth. They appear to radiate from the constellation Leo. Spiritually, that means when you see this particular meteor shower, you should carry yourself with pride, present yourself well, and basically do what is called “holding court”. Meaning of the Perseids

The Perseids are meteors that form a shower which is visible from mid-July to mid-August and appear to originate at the constellation Perseus. The constellation is named for a legendary Greek hero who may or may not have been a real person. In the myths, he overcame nearly impossible odds to rescue the woman he loved and to become ruler. The spiritual meaning of seeing these meteor showers is that you can do anything you set your mind to. You should take heart, overcome fears, and have the courage to attempt what you believe you cannot achieve. Once you get started, you will be pleasantly surprised how much you accomplish.

Meaning of Comets

Comets are not meteors, but icy objects that have tails. Forming near the sun, they just keep going and going for about 1,000 years. There are over 4,000 comets on orbit now, and at least one is observable to the naked eye each year. With telescopes, many more may be seen. Spiritually, they represent tenacity, undertaking long-term projects, reliability, and not giving up. If a cosmic chunk of ice and stardust can last for as many as 1,000 years, your resolve can last to see worthy projects through. Meaning of Asteroids

Asteroids are small bodies in space that are 600 miles in diameter or less and orbit the sun. They are considered minor planets. Some people have suggested that asteroids have the potential to be mined for resources that may become depleted on earth or colonies can be set up for human habitation on asteroids. We have no idea if any of this is practical, but spiritually, asteroids represent untapped potential. When presented with asteroid symbolism, the universe is calling you to apply yourself and reach deep within yourself to utilize skills and talents that you rarely do.

Meaning of Dark Flights

A dark flight means a meteor has entered a stage where it has cooled and stopped emitting light, so it continues moving, but it is not visible. This makes it difficult to see it and predict where it may fall. Spiritually, dark flights represent hidden wisdom and knowledge. They represent having faith in results and not worrying. While the unknown continues, you, too, should continue. Make your plans, do the work you have been doing, and wait. Results will come and the hidden will always reveal itself. You have the power to handle any challenges that may surface. You can even get psychic help if you need it. Find out how here: Speaking with an Intuitive Counselor

Meaning of Craters

Craters represent the aftermath of an impact and a permanent change from it. They may seem like damage, but unless they are enormous or destroy something, it is just evidence of a change. Spiritually, this represents the changes in life after something happens. Our own “craters” can be beautiful. They are signs that we have learned and grown from an experience rather than suffered because of it. Not every change is a bad thing, and when people can see we have improved from something that changed us, they will immediately respect that. More than that, we can take pride in how we learn and grow with time. We are more powerful than anything that changes us.
