Find out how to believe in something but most importantly how to put belief into action to make things happen. In and of itself, belief won't move mountains, create miracles, or fix every problem, but it is the starting point. So read on to find out all about the power of belief and how to make it work for you.

What is Belief?

“She believed she could, so she did.”- Roald Dahl

Belief is confidence that something is true. Some people need evidence that something is true and other people just automatically believe that it is because of something they have been told. When we were children, we learned to believe things we had been told, because it saves time. Investigating everything that we are told would be impossible. This means we learn things more quickly. What we learn to believe helps us to make sense of the world around us and helps us to make informed decisions. Our beliefs also make us comfortable. When the world conforms to what we believe, we feel secure.

Belief affects your perception of reality and how you function. It all depends on how you view belief. Are you one of the people who needs evidence? Are you one of the people who believes things so strongly that no amount of evidence can change your mind? An inability to change your mind when presented with inconclusive evidence that shows that you're wrong demonstrates that your belief is more important to you than what's actually going on. This can be very bad. If someone has healed from an injury but they believe that they are permanently disabled anyways, they will limit their own ability to function in the world. If they believed that they were permanently injured but the doctor proves to them that they're not, they can change what they do and function more normally. Are you someone who is capable of reexamining your beliefs when they don't seem to fit with what's actually happening? Even if you're not, you can learn to be. A wise man once said that when people are looking at proof to support a theory, they have usually already decided what they think the conclusion will be. The wise man stated that most people only look at evidence that supports what they already believe. That's how powerful our beliefs are. The reason why it's upsetting to some people when their beliefs are challenged is because beliefs become sacred to us. Those beliefs are sacred because they influence our entire lives.

What if you have a belief that is false? It will influence you to do, say, or feel the wrong things. It's very important to allow your beliefs to be challenged whether they are beliefs about which brand of skin cream is better or even something as powerful as religious beliefs. Your beliefs either support a healthy life or they create toxic things in your life. If you're functioning under a false belief, you are not operating within reality. Like the individual who thought they were permanently disabled when they weren't, you will hold yourself back and years down the road, regret it. Change and healing can come , even through holistics if you allow it. Read more here: Healing Holistically- Is It Legit?

What Happens When We Believe?

What Happens When We Believe?

“Believe in yourself and there will come a day when others have no choice but to believe with you.”- Cynthia Kersey

Beliefs change us. These changes at first go unnoticed, but then as time goes on, the changes become more obvious. The first thing that happens with belief is we accept the belief, and next the belief shapes our behavior. After we have made noticeable changes in our behavior, we unconsciously seek further evidence that our belief is correct. This is often sought by measuring results.

We Accept the Belief

When we believe something, we first have to accept that belief. Acceptance of a belief registers in the mind first. You may be told something by someone who you trust like a parent, a friend, or even a teacher. You might do a bit of an investigation before you accept a belief, but once you think it's true, you believe. What we believe in helps to shape our personal identity especially with things like religion, socially acceptable behaviors, political beliefs, or what is acceptable as good art and fashion. If you're still in the exploration or questioning stage, you've not accepted the belief yet. Once you get past that, it is set in your mind that something is true.

Belief Shapes Behavior

Once you have accepted a belief, you will start to behave as if you do. The way that you think about whatever it is that you believe will be directly affected by the fact that you do believe it. That will affect how you view other things, and your thoughts translate into actions. If you believe that you got food poisoning at your favorite restaurant, you probably won't ever go back. If you believe that it's going to rain and you don't like driving in the rain, you will probably stay home. If you believe that something is false, such as a warning that someone gave you about someone else, you will probably change your attitude toward the person who you felt was not telling you the truth. Behavior is something we choose. We can also choose to be happy even in tough times. Read how here: Being Happy, Even in Dark Times

We Seek Further Evidence

One of the ways that we seek to prove to ourselves that our belief is correct is we surround ourselves with people whose beliefs are aligned with ours. Some people call this circling with like-minded individuals. It's understandable that we are more comfortable spending more time with people who are most like us. However, we can spend so much time with these people, that we use them as a way to reinforce our beliefs. If you have a lot of lively political discussions with people who vote in exactly the same way as you, you might find it impossible to have that same discussion at a family dinner with people who disagree with you and not find yourself fighting with them. Consciously, we believe that our beliefs are correct, but unconsciously, we seek comfort in being told that they are.

We Measure Results

Finally, when we believe something, we unconsciously look for proof that we're right by measurable results. If you believe that you can run a marathon, achieving a half marathon while you're training proves to you that you can do it. If you believe your girlfriend is cheating on you, every time she's friendly with someone else, it might seem to reinforce the belief that she's cheating. If you believe that you have a washed out skin color, you will be acutely aware of every color that doesn't look good on you, and you will take that as further evidence that you have a washed out skin color. When we are presented with what we feel is proof of our beliefs, that's seen as a result that further reinforces our beliefs to us. What Happens When We Don’t Believe?

“ The lack of faith is not doubt. It is certainty.”- Abigail Van Buren

Not believing in something is exactly the opposite of believing in it and exactly the opposite things will happen. If you don't believe something, you won't engage with it. It's always important to question what you think, are told, and what you feel. Not all beliefs are valid and it's healthy to understand that. However, if something is valid and you don't believe it, you will miss out. The biggest mistake that most people make in believing in things is to not believe in themselves. When you don't believe in yourself, you don't give the attention, time, or support to things that belong in your life.

You will speak against yourself. You won't put in enough effort. You won't look for opportunities. When somebody gives you a compliment, you will argue with them. You won't give yourself the credit you deserve for your accomplishments, and you will not try to accomplish more. You will miss out on wonderful experiences that you would have if you don't believe in yourself. You won't be as proud of yourself as you would be if you try. Worst of all, if you don’t believe in yourself, and all these negative things happen, it will make you believe in yourself even less.

Does Belief Make Something True?

Does Belief Make Something True?

“Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn’t go away.”- Philip K. Dick

Simply believing in something doesn't make it so, but it makes it true for the person who believes in it. That's why belief is so important. We have learned that when you believe in something it influences your attitude, which directly influences your behavior. It is so important to examine our beliefs. Belief does not automatically make something true, but it becomes true to us. Our beliefs dictate how we decide everything that we say and do and that creates good and bad consequences in our lives.

For example, if you believe that you are incapable of getting a job, even if you apply and interview for the job, your confidence level will probably be so low you won't get hired. If you believe that you have what it takes to get the job, you will have the enthusiasm and drive to work for it until you achieve it. If you believe that someone is your best friend who has your best interests at heart, you will trust them. If that person is talking badly about you behind your back, it doesn't matter whether you believe they are your friend, they're not. Examine your beliefs carefully, so you don’t fall into the trap of functioning outside of reality.

How to Believe

How to Believe

“ Man is made by his belief. As he believes, so he is.” Von Goethe

Sometimes it's difficult to believe in yourself or to believe in something, but it all starts with one decision. You have to decide that you want to. The first thing you have to do is open yourself to the possibilities and watch and accept opportunities to prove you can achieve what you want. Just don't give up no matter how difficult things will be. Believe you can achieve something, and go do it!

Open Your Mind

If you're having trouble believing, open yourself to the possibility that what you believe could happen. Instead of wondering what will happen if you fail, ask yourself what will happen if you succeed. Instead of thinking you're not capable, remind yourself of all the things that you accomplished before. There was a time you hadn’t accomplished those things wasn't there? Now it's time to open your mind to the possibility of achieving even more. Believe that you are capable and open yourself to taking a chance to prove it.

Accept Blessings

There are opportunities every day to prove how much we can achieve. Those are blessings. Instead of denying yourself those opportunities, accept them. Before you can accept those blessings, you must be aware of them. Look, listen, and then wait for the opportunities to present themselves. They are out there, just waiting for you. Let them happen.

Try

If what you're trying to do seems impossible, but other people have accomplished it before, what makes you think that you can't? To be fair, maybe it's something you've not done before and you don't know what you're capable of. Try anyways. All the encouragement that you need lies within you. Simply look in the mirror, look deeply into your own eyes, and say this to yourself: “ I don't know how much I can accomplish. I don't know how well I can do it, but I want to find out. So I am going to go in there and do the best I can and that will be good enough.” Then go do it. You will be pleasantly surprised how well you do.

Don’t Give Up

Once you start trying, be aware that sometimes there will be obstacles, setbacks, or distractions. Don't let them stop you. Things might seem difficult, or even impossible. Give yourself a break if you become exhausted. Then, remember why you started this to begin with and keep going. Don't give up on what you believe in, and most importantly never give up on yourself.

Belief is very important because what we believe creates our thoughts and our thoughts dictate action. We don't try for the things that we want to when we don't believe in ourselves. If you want to believe in yourself, open your mind and try by putting belief into action. Just make sure not to give up when things get difficult. Sometimes you don't have proof that things are going to work out but if you believe that you have what it takes, they probably will. So believe. If anybody can succeed at living your life well, it’s you!
