What is Numerology?
Numerology is defined as the study of the occult significance of numbers and this is done in a lot of different ways. In the ancient world, gematria was the practice of assigning numeric value to letters and words, and the earliest example known to us of this dates from Assyria in the 8th century BCE, when King Sargon II used his name to come up with measurements to build the wall of Khorsabad. The Greeks, Egyptians, Chinese and other ancient people believed numbers had sacred meaning, but it is perhaps the Hebrews who are most famous for their use of gematria. There were multiple ways they used numbers to correspond to letters to find out sacred meanings of words, and in the Old and New Testaments many examples of this can be found.
For example, Genesis 14:14 stated that Moses took 318 servants with him to rescue his kin, and this number is believed to mean a couple of different things depending on who you talk to. Some believe the number 318 was saying he was looking forward to the coming of Jesus to save his people. Others believe the number 318 coincides with the name of Eleazar, a nephew of Moses, meaning he is who went along to help. Another place this system can be applied is the use of the number 666 to denote the name of the beast some interpret as the devil in the Book of Revelations. However, if gematria is used, the numbers give reference to the 1st century Roman emperor Nero who persecuted Christians.
Numerology has been used by a lot of different people in a lot of different ways. There are simple ways to use it and some systems are very complex and take many years of study with great masters. A lot of today’s new age people who believe in numerology say that numbers can give us divine guidance, talk about our personalities, what things we excel at, and what we are supposed to be doing in life. They are also used in divination by some people, and some even believe that if certain numbers appear to you often, they are codes from celestial beings used to deliver sacred messages. Calculating Life Path numbers is just one of many ways of using numerology.
