What is Natural Healing?

What is Natural Healing?

Natural, or holistic healing is the type of medical practice that takes into account your whole person and means your mind, body, emotions, and spirit are included in your wellness. People who embrace this type of healing believe that this is the best way to be healthy. However, a large focus of people who embrace this type of healing do not include a lot of emotional or spiritual healing. They focus on non-pharmaceutical things that they can use instead of prescription medication or therapy from medical doctors. These things can include vitamin and dietary changes, use of flower essences and essential oils, energy manipulation through balancing of the chakras or Reiki, and even using crystals for healing.

Some people believe that the human body is automatically programmed to heal itself and will do so if allowed. Some people believe that balancing the right amount of time with nature away from modern society will automatically provide that. Other people take a mind over matter approach, and believe that they can think themselves to healing. People who believe this think that if they tell themselves they are sick, they will automatically be sick, but if they tell themselves that they are healing, it will jump start the body's natural healing mechanisms. Other people focus on the right type of exercise, including certain foods, and shunning other foods and they believe this regimen will heal the body from the inside out. Is Natural Healing Anti-Medicine?

Natural healing in and of itself is not anti anything. Some people who embrace natural healing techniques are, however against modern medicine. They believe this for a number of different reasons. Some people feel that conventional medication is overly processed and that it is bad to put such things into the body. Some people are afraid of putting something into their body unless they know exactly what it is, and they do not trust pharmaceutical companies to disclose this information. Some people believe that modern medicine keeps people alive and prolongs their lives unnaturally and humans were not built to live forever. Some people even cite religious beliefs that their god gives and takes life away intentionally and that modern medicine interferes with that. Is Conventional Medicine Bad?

Reddit comments in a thread asking why people distrust doctors provide answers as to why so many people avoid conventional medicine. To be fair, being the patient is difficult. It can be scary, especially if you are seeing a new doctor you have not yet grown to know and trust. When you don’t feel good, that makes trusting a stranger even more difficult. Fear of doctors and the chance they may not care, or make a mistake is a big reason some people think conventional medicine is bad. Another lies in the fact it is costly to see doctors, and sometimes, doctors overprescribe medications. Read what some people on Reddit had to say: What drives the fear of medicine? Why don’t people turn away from medical recommendation? Why do people hate masks? Why does someone not take their MS medication? Why doesn’t someone follow the testing you ordered? : r/medicine

Fear of Doctors

According to Harvard Medical School, fear of doctors was on the rise in 2023, with 39% more people reporting anxiety before seeing a doctor than the previous year. They say medical anxiety is a real issue that keeps some people from getting treatment they need to be healthier. One thing that they reported scares people is the risk of insulting a doctor if they seek a second opinion. They say not to worry about that, and it is a good idea to seek another opinion. It can be scary to go to a doctor, simply because you don’t feel good, and you don’t know exactly what will happen. Don’t think you are the only one who gets anxious about going to the doctor. High Costs

The ugly truth is, some people feel like they can't afford to go to the doctor. In the United States alone, medical debt costs about $220 billion. About 3 million Americans owe at least $10,000 in medical debt. In 2023, about 26 million Americans had no health insurance coverage. That means all of those people would have to pay all medical services out of pocket, and some people just don't have the money. It seems a lot less expensive to use a crystal or an herb from your own garden to treat a medical problem than to rack up thousands of dollars in debt seeing a conventional doctor. However, something to keep in mind is if a medical illness is not treated when it's small, it can get much worse and cost a lot more to treat down the road. For example shunning high blood pressure medications because you don't pay what to pay for them can result in a massive heart attack that costs multiple thousands of dollars in medical debt if it doesn't kill you.

Overprescribing of Drugs

Overprescribing of Drugs

In the United States, some drugs like prescription painkillers and steroids have been overprescribed to the point that it's put people into the hospital. The author herself ended up in the hospital several years ago due to an allergic reaction to a medication that her doctor later admitted she hadn't even needed in the first place. Situations like this make some people skeptical of conventional doctors and it makes them want to shun modern medication altogether. Don't forget, some medications like asthma medication, insulin for diabetes, and blood pressure medication save lives every day, though. Natural Healing Techniques

Aside from going to someone who says that they are a Reiki practitioner, a chiropractor, a massage therapist, a herbalist, or even just a faith healer, there are some tried and true natural healing techniques that you can try on your own. Most people who embrace modern medical techniques agree that these natural healing techniques work, and have countless studies proving their effectiveness. The human body consists of mostly water, and supporting that by drinking plenty of water is a good way to stay healthy. Getting the right amount of rest and exercise helps also. Besides what you drink, the food that you take into your body can heal you or poison you. For your mental and emotional well-being, sessions with a professional counselor can work wonders for your healing.

Water

Our bodies are about 50-70% water. Some doctors say to divide your body weight by half and drink that many ounces of water per day for optimal health. So, using this formula, a 160 pound person would drink 80 ounces of water per day. Some people say to drink 8 glasses of 8 ounces of water per day. Some people say that is too much water, however. Other people say each person’s necessary water intake depends on the temperature outside, their activity levels, and individual health conditions. So, some people say each of us needs a different amount of water daily. Remember that some foods and drinks like fruits and teas have water in them too and ask your doctor how much water you need. Rest and Exercise

Proper exercise keeps the body in tip top shape. It keeps the body at a healthy weight, helps aid in cardiovascular and digestive health, and keeps your muscles toned and active. Too much exercise wears the body out though. Getting the correct amount of rest, relaxation, and sleep is just as important as getting the right amount of exercise. Each person's body needs the perfect balance of these things to feel best. Remember that exercise doesn't have to be a chore. Going for a walk and talking with friends, or walking your dog can be great exercise. Pick exercise that you enjoy doing so it won't feel like drudgery, and don't overdo it. Remember wearing your body out by pushing it too hard it's just as bad as not getting enough exercise.

Food

Food

Some people believe that less food is better than more food, but some experts say that instead of reducing your calorie intake, you should focus on getting all the right nutrition. Some people say that foods like pork are bad to eat if you have gout but cherries are great. Popping a pill to get more fiber might be effective, but so is switching out regular bread for whole wheat bread and adding more vegetables to get fiber in your diet. Watching how much salt you eat and upping your intake of fresh herbs for flavorings can help to lower sodium and hypertension levels. Regulating your body's needs for protein with the amount of fresh leafy greens and making sure you get all the vitamins and minerals you need on your dinner plate is considered a great method of holistic healing. Herbs aren’t just great for healing but for magic too. Read about magic with herbs here: Using Magical Spices and Herbs

Counseling

Some people don't like the idea of talking about their feelings, thoughts, and emotional needs with a doctor. However, counseling is a form of holistic healing. Counseling won't erase your past traumas, but a counselor can help you to work through the feelings you have about what happened to you and help you to heal emotionally. Conditions like depression for bipolar disorder cannot be talked away, but counselling when you have these disorders is crucial. Counselling will help you with coping mechanisms, lifestyle changes, and will help you to understand what these disorders do.

Counselling isn't just for people who have gone through traumatic experiences or have a healthcare problem. Counselling is for their family members too. If you are helping to support a loved one through substance abuse, emotional healing, or helping them to learn how to cope with a medical diagnosis, counseling helps you to know what to expect and helps you to understand your own stress levels and emotions too. Counseling is a drug free method of treatment and is also used to supplement treatments which do include medications. Medications don't treat everything though. Some people's emotional challenges have not been helped by pharmaceuticals. However, counseling helps them to work through what's going on and come up with solutions. Can Natural Healing Cure Everything?

Nothing cures everything, and some things have no cure. Some people want to believe they can treat any illness by themselves at home or with oils and prayer, but science proves that those things don’t fix everything. Bubonic plague, when allowed to go without modern medicine, kills. In the 1300’s it is estimated that at least 25 million people died from it, but today, we have medicine that cures it. HIV is not held off by holistic medicine, but modern medicine has provided medications that help. Vaccines save countless lives from things that previously had been epidemic like smallpox and measles. There is no natural remedy that does that.

There are some people that say they have never had an illness that natural medicine didn't cure, and that could be true. However, they have been fortunate that they have not had any illnesses that they can treat with natural remedies. There are some people who will try to tell you that instead of going to a doctor, you should pay them for herbal remedies, vitamin treatments, massage, and energy therapy. No one has ever been able to prove that these remedies cure everything. Holistics have been proven to cure some things and conventional medicine has been proven to cure other things. The decision is yours. It's your body and your right to choose what type of remedies you use for illness, pain, or even just mild discomfort. Holistics are legit, and a lot of people swear by them- but they cannot work alone.

Herbs, crystals, and positive thinking are things that some people swear by for health and healing. Other people say these things don't heal. It has been proven however, that the proper diet, drinking a good amount of water, and doing things like getting plenty of rest and the proper exercise help to keep the body as healthy as possible and aid in healing. A lot of people combine conventional medicine with natural healing and say that has the best success rate. On the quest for health, it never hurts to look into all of your options and get multiple opinions. Healing could be a natural remedy or a pharmaceutical away.
